Research Interests

  • Soybean yield
    In collaboration with Brian Dier’s research program, we are mapping genes that control soybean yield in populations developed from crosses between exotic soybean germplasm and high yielding cultivars. Our goal is to identify specific genetic contributions from exotic germplasm that can increase yield of commercial cultivars. We are also extensively using exotic germplasm in our breeding program to increase soybean yield.
  • Wild soybean
    We are using wild soybean in our breeding program to capture favorable alleles for yield that were lost in the domestication bottleneck. We are also mapping traits from wild soybean that were involved in domestication or that have significantly different phenotypes from soybean.
  • Perennial Glycine
    In collaboration with Ram Singh, we are introgressing genes and cytoplasm from Glycine tomentella into soybean through a wide hybridization protocol developed by Dr. Singh. Our primary objective is to transfer disease resistance but we are also evaluating seed yield and changes in plant morphology. An important part of this research is to understand the extent and location of genetic introgression into the soybean genome.
  • Abiotic stress
    Working with a team of University and ARS scientists at the SoyFACE facility, we do research on the genetic variation of the soybean response to increased CO2 and O3.
  • Soybean germplasm
    We curate the USDA Soybean Germplasm Collection and do research to quantify, understand the distribution of, and utilize the genetic diversity in genus Glycine.
